HEALTHCARE FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION

Together We Succeed... a message from our president

Fall is my favorite time of year. The crisp air and falling leaves tell us that fall is here and change is in the air. This fall, there is a lot more changing than just the trees and the temperature. These past months we’ve seen a lot of changes, some of historic proportions.

First, the events in the financial markets over the past couple of months indicate that we’re living in unprecedented times.  If these events have affected your 401k balance like they have mine, you know what I mean.  Beyond its impact on personal investments, the havoc wreaked in the financial markets has and will continue to significantly impact the economy as a whole. The problems in the financial markets will most assuredly bring change – changes in company practices, budgets and workforce; changes in spending and savings habits; and changes in governmental regulations. As these changes continue to impact you and your organization, look to the connections you’ve made within HFMA to help you through the challenges.

Next, for the first time in our country’s history we will have a President who is African-American. Additionally, the President, the House, and the Senate will all be controlled by the Democrat party. With healthcare near the top of the political agenda, change is likely on the horizon for all of us who work in the healthcare industry. As an industry, we will all face whatever challenges brought on by changes in the political landscape. Know that we’re all in this together, and that we can lean on the connections we’ve made within HFMA to help meet the challenges.

Another change that some of you may have noticed, though not as drastic as the previous two, is that we have held a couple of joint meetings with AAHAM this year. This year we decided to experiment with more joint meetings in an effort to help Chapter members to expand professional and personal networks and make additional connections with others in the healthcare industry. It is my sincere hope that we all took advantage of these opportunities to form connections with others in healthcare outside of HFMA.

Making connections with other healthcare finance professionals is more important than ever in this ever-changing, fast-paced healthcare industry. The connections that we make personally and professionally are at the core of our success.  These connections that we make through HFMA allow us to take advantage of the many resources that are made available through our HFMA membership. My role as president of the HFMA Utah Chapter is to provide you with opportunities to create these connections, and then it’s up to you to do the rest. Together we will succeed during this time of change as we lean on the connections we’ve made.

Best wishes to each of you as we approach the Holiday Season.
